Its not that theres some intrinsic characteristic of fast food that makes people impatient its the habits weve come to associate with fast food, such as always being on the run, eating on the go, and never slowing down enough to enjoy a healthy meal, that bring out our impatience. We have to be very careful in choosing our pursuits, because our habits make us. Cultivating the habits that follow will send you in the right direction. Theyll help you to lead a more meaningful and fulfilling life, whereby you cultivate the best within yourself.1. Stay away from people who erode your quality of lifeIf merely seeing a logo for a fast-food company can make you feel impatient, just think how much more impact a toxic person can have on your life. They might be unhappy about your decision to stay away from them, and they might tell you very loudly just how unhappy they are, but isnt avoiding them worth the cumulative effects of years of their negative influence? There are always going to be toxic people who have a way of getting under your skin and staying there. Each time you find yourself thinking about a coworker or person who makes your blood boil, practice being grateful for someone else in your life instead. There are plenty of people out there who deserve your attention, and the brde thing you want to do is think about the people who dont matter.2. No more phone, tablet, or computer in bedThis is a big one, which most people dont even realize harms their sleep and productivity. Short-wavelength blue light plays an important role in determining your mood, energy level, and sleep quality. In the morning, sunlight contains high concentrations of this blue light. When your eyes are exposed to it directly, it halts production o f the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin and makes you feel alert. In the afternoon, the suns rays lose their blue light, which allows your body to produce melatonin and this starts making you sleepy. By the evening, your brain doesnt expect any blue light exposure and is very sensitive to it. fruchtwein of our favorite evening devices- laptops, tablets, and mobile phones- emit short-wavelength blue light brightly and right in your face. This exposure impairs melatonin production and interferes with your ability to fall asleep, as well as with the quality of your sleep once you do nod off. As weve all experienced, poor nights sleep has disastrous effects. The best thing you can do is to avoid these devices after dinner (television is OK for most people, as long as they sit far enough away from the set).3. Appreciate the here and nowGratitude is fundamental to peace and happiness- not wealth, glamour, adventure, or fast cars, but simple appreciation for what you have. Just because you cant afford champagne and caviar doesnt mean that you never enjoy a meal. Hot dogs and beer on the back deck with your friends taste just as good. So, dont fool yourself into thinking that you need something that you dont currently have in order to be happy, because the truth is that if you cant appreciate what you have now, you wont be able to appreciate the good life if you ever get it.4. Realize that things arent always as you perceive them to beThis goes along with appreciating the here and now. That person you envy because they seem to have the perfect life might be dealing with all kinds of problems behind closed doors. That perfection could be a total mirage. Your employers decision to move the office might seem like a huge hassle when you first hear about it, but it could end up being one of the best things that ever happens to you. Youre not omniscient and youre not a fortune-teller, so be open to the possibility that life might have some surprises in store, because what yo u see is not always what you get.5. Get started, even though you might failMost writers spend countless hours brainstorming their characters and plots, and they even write page after page that they know theyll never include in the books. They do this because they know that ideas need time to develop. We tend to freeze up when its time to get started because we know that our ideas arent perfect and that what we produce might not be any good. But how can you ever produce something great if you dont get started and give your ideas time to evolve? Author Jodi Picoult summarized the importance of avoiding perfectionism perfectly You can edit a bad page, but you cant edit a blank page.6. Get organizedPeople joke about new ideas being in short supply, but I think that the one resource thats really scarce is spare time. Do you know anybody who has some? Yet we waste so much of it by not being organized. We touch things two or three times before we do something with them (like tossing the ma il down on the counter then moving it to the table so we can cook dinner) and once weve put them away, we spend even more time looking for them. Have a place for all of those little things you need to take care of when you get a minute, whether its your childs permission slip for a field trip or an overdue bill, and then get to them in a timely manner otherwise youll be searching through a huge stack of stuff for the one thing you need.7. Start a collection of the things that truly resonate with youHave you ever come across a quote or a meme that so perfectly summed up your feelings that you wanted to keep it forever? You know that its in one of those coats you wore five winters ago, and you really hope its not the one you gave to Goodwill. When you come across something that resonates with you - whether its something that expresses who you are or who you want to be - have a central place to keep those gems. It doesnt matter whether its a spiral notebook, a leather binder, or a fo lder on Evernote, have a place to collect the things that matter so that you can revisit them regularly.8. Do something that reminds you who you areWe all joke about having me time, but what is that, really? Its making time for those activities that we feel most authentically ourselves doing, when all the masks are off and we can justbe. Whether its going for a run or dancing around with your 80s favorites blaring at top volume, make time for those moments. Theyre incredibly rejuvenating.9. Say noResearch conducted at the University of California in San Francisco shows that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression, all of which erode self-control. Saying no is indeed a major self-control challenge for many people. No is a powerful word that you should not be afraid to wield. When its time to say no, emotionally intelligent people avoid phrases like I dont think I can or Im not certain. Saying no to a new commitment honors your existing commitments and gives you the opportunity to successfully fulfill them. Just remind yourself that saying no is an act of self-control now that will increase your future self-control by preventing the negative effects of over commitment.10. Stick to realistic goalsHow many people start January by proclaiming, Im going to lose 30 pounds by March? Big, scary, crazy goals can be incredibly inspiring- until you fall short, and then, instead of inspiration, youre left with disappointment and guilt. Im certainly not suggesting that you stop setting goals that push and challenge you, just that you try to stick within the bounds of reality.Bringing it all togetherYour character is determined by your attitude and how you spend your time, and so is happiness. 3 Questions if You Feel Behind in Your Career -The Muse
3 Questions if You Feel Behind in Your Career -The Muse3 Questions if You Feel Behind in Your CareerYou see the latest 30 Under 30 article and- spoiler- youre notlagelage on it. Then you read a status update that your college roommate started her own business. Now, for the icing on the cake Your company honors the youngest person to ever be promoted to senior management. And, you guessed it, its not you. You start to wonder Am I falling behind in my career? The short answer is No. Careers are not a race. Nor is there one, clear, winning outcome that everyone should be striving for. However, your jump to quick comparisons may indicate that you feel like youre coming up short of your personal career goals- and that is something to pay attention to.Here are three questions to ask yourself to gut check how things really stand1. Am I Expecting Overnight Success?Youre working yourself to the bone doing what you know is great work. But your efforts arent leading to advancement and recognitio n, so youre pretty sure youre doing something wrong. Not necessarily. Youve heard the term overnight success, but do you know that people generally work for many years before that big moment? (It took Pokemon Go two decades to become a phenomenon) Or that many successful people fail before succeeding? Just because youre not receiving any cool awards or invitations (yet), doesnt mean youre on the wrong track.OK, if Im Not on the Wrong Track, How Do I Make Sure Im on the Right One?First, keep up the good work Recognize that there is value in doing a good job, independent of any external accolades. You have to put the work in before youll reap the rewards. That said, if you feel routinely overlooked, consider spending more time on making yourself stand out by working on your personal branding- that means your social media presence, your personal site, and what comes up when prospective hiring managers Google you. Its up to you to tell people around you that youre up to something special. (Bonus Even 15 minutes a week can make a difference)2. Am I Prioritizing Other Values Over Industry Fame?Imagine a world in which youre frequently asked to be a guest on The Today Show, regularly featured on Influencer lists, and called out at company meetings and given awards- youd do anything to make those things happen, right? At first, you might say, Hell yeah But then when told that it would require working seven days a week, giving up time with your friends and family, and sacrificing your sleep- you might change your mind. If youre honest with yourself, you might find you dont care about having an ambitious, award-winning career, because your priorities are truly elsewhere. You might prefer to spend all the attention and energy that other people spend climbing corporate ladders on your loved ones or hobbies. And thats OKThere are very few truly bad career choices (outside of the obvious ones which you can probably figure out on your own). Just know that every choice has cons equences and how you prioritize them determines how fast you move up that ladder. I Do Love Time With My Loved Ones, But How Do I Stop Feeling Jealous When My Co-worker Wins Awards? When you find yourself making comparisons and feeling jealous, take some time to reconnect to your priorities. Remember that you get to choose what you put first- and if you want to, you can still change your mind. As long as youre happy and fulfilled, youre doing OK. 3. Have I Been Slacking Off?Some people take their career path above and beyond, becoming the professional athletes of the work world. Leveling up that hard takes blood, sweat, and tears- and if thats not your cup of tea thats okay, not everyone who jogs wants to be an Olympic sprinter. But thats also not an excuse to let your career get out of shape. Have you been running on autopilot? Sitting on the sidelines? Staying in your comfort zone and avoiding new challenges? Theres a major difference between wanting to stay where you are and coast ing.Yes, I Guess Ive Been Slacking a Little Bit...Keeping with the fitness analogy Just like its possible to start eating right and exercising again, putting time and effort into your career will help you to course-correct. Identify and set new goals for yourself. (Not sure where to start? Get some help from a career coach.) Put in the work to set your career on a healthier path. There is no one-size-fits-all career path and comparing your trajectory to others isnt productive. Some professionals fly forward quickly while others take a slow and steady approach. A job can be a paycheck or a passion. Career growth may even take a back burner while kids are small or family members need extra care. The key is to pay attention and to be clear on your own priorities so that you can adjust your career to fit your goals at each phase of your life. So long as youre not falling behind in your own estimation, youre doing just fine.Photo of person looking courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images.

Writing a Resume When You Have No Experience
Writing a Resume When You Have No Experience Writing a Resume When You Have No Experience Writing a Resume When You Have No Experience Getting a job can be hard for anyone, even a highly experienced professional who has successfully navigated several job changes. But it can be particularly challenging if you have no experience in the field you want to work in. Here are five situations that describe job seekers who may lack relevant experience: The teenager seeking his or her first job. The college senior about to graduate and leap into the real world. The person who worked in the family business that just closed. The stay-at-home mom who wants to enter (or re-enter) the workforce. The person making a drastic career change that causes friends and relatives to ask: You wanna be a what?!? Why?? With the possible exception of the teenager (whose jobs typically require application forms, not resumes), these people need to prepare and send a resume. But how do you market yourself effectively with your resume when you dont have related job experience? The answer: Focus on transferable skills and volunteer work. Also, it would be a good idea to drop in a recommendation or two from people who can vouch for qualities such as your work ethic, demeanor, or your ability to work as part of a team. Here are potential sources for all three areas, targeted at each of the hypothetical job seekers above: Teenagers Transferable Skills: Anything learned from odd jobs such as babysitting or mowing lawns; computer skills; leadership and teamwork skills from participating in sports, band, etc. Volunteer Work: Charity or community work involving related skills; extracurricular school activities Recommendations: Teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, administrators, neighbors, customers from babysitting or lawn-mowing jobs College Seniors Transferable Skills:Anything from school or paid jobs that matches what the employer is seeking (e.g., a semester-long team project from one of your classes); relevant courses; computer skills; leadership and teamwork skills from participating in sports, band, etc. Volunteer Work: Soup kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, or other community work involving related skills; on-campus extracurricular activities Recommendations: Professors and advisors, supervisors from previous jobs, recent alumni familiar with your skills and talents Family Business Transferable Skills:Any skills from the business that match what the employer is seeking, from day-to-day management to menial tasks to computer skills (if applicable) Volunteer Work: Charity or community work involving related skills Recommendations: Former customers, suppliers, vendors, even employees Stay-at-Home Mom Transferable Skills: Household management and organization (e.g., childcare, food service, housekeeping, budgeting, health monitoring, transportation, schedule management, travel arrangements, event planning, tutoring, advocacy, safety and first aid, care-giving, counseling, mentoring); computer skills; relevant skills from previous jobs, even if they go back many years Volunteer Work: Charity and community work involving related skills, school-related activities (e.g., fundraising, event planning, classroom assistance) Recommendations: Other parents, fellow volunteers, school administrators, former employers, community leaders Career Changer Transferable Skills:Any skill that transfers easily from one industry to another (e.g., writing, marketing, payroll, project management, tool use, business machine operation); soft skills such as team-building, organizational, and communication skills; computer skills Volunteer Work: Charity and community work Recommendations: Former colleagues, supervisors As you write your resume, always keep in mind that its a personal marketing tool and you must use it to put yourself in the best possible position to land an interview. Don't be modest! Show each prospective employer that you understand their needs and how you are equipped to fulfill them. Help them see the benefits they'll gain from hiring you. Thats very important in todays economy, and even more so for the candidate who lacks direct experience.

Difference Between Mixing and Mastering Audio Recording
Difference Between Mixing and Mastering Audio Recording Difference Between Mixing and Mastering Audio Recording Mixing and mastering are the two base components of professional record producing, so a good mixing and mastering job is a must when youre recording an album that you plan to sell. You can use one or both. You might be able to get away without mastering if youre only recording a demo, but it can depend on what you want your demo to achieve. The better it is, the more likely it will help you reach your goal, so you might want to invest the time and money necessary to do both. Mixing Brings Multiple Layers Together Mixing refers to the process of putting multiple layers of audio together to make one final track or to musically modify an existing track. Youre tinkering with basically everything you recorded when you mix a song. Youll do things like drop in effects, adjust faders, and EQ your tracks. Think of mixing as putting together a puzzle. Youre combining the parts of what youve recorded, making sure everything hangs together, then youll add some finishing touches. The jury is out as to whether excellent mastering can fix a bad mix. Some professionals think so while others disagree. Watch out for the red flags that often indicate youre creating a bad mix in the first place. Clipping is never good. Leave headroom and turn down the drums. Filter when you EQ. You should be pleased with the way the song sounds when youre finished mixing it. You should feel confident that nothing is missing musically. For a lot of musicians, mixing is where the real magic happens. Its when a composition goes from being a hodgepodge of notes and words to becoming what you envisioned as the finished track. Tips for Optimal Mixing You can hire a mixing engineer- something you might want to consider if you have the budget for it and no experience of your own- or you can attempt to mix your song or album yourself. If youre mixing an album, youll have multiple tracks. Find similarities among them, then organize them for flow. Set them in the order in which youll work on them, the order in which theyll appear on the album. For example, if one track is heart-thumping rock, you would not necessarily want to follow this with a ballad, nor would you want to organize the tracks with the ballad immediately preceding the rock track. Arrange your tracks so theres some sense of continuity and make sure youre able to easily identify each as you work. Youll also want to make sure that your volume levels on all tracks are similar as you work your way through the songs. You can compress with EQ to achieve this. It will heighten quiet spots and tone down louder ones. Smooth the tracks out using filters to eliminate excess or intrusive noises and sounds. All tracks should have their own frequencies. Your goal is to make sure that each voice and every instrument leaves its own imprint. It can be helpful to use buses on each: one for guitars, one for vocals, and so on. Dont overcompress your tracks. Aim for a low ratio of anywhere from 2:1 to 3:1 dB of gain reduction. You can give a slight additional boost to a particular word or words if the tail ends of some vocals are getting lost. Now move your mix from mono to stereo on each track. Panning will get you there. And make the mix yours. Put your stamp on it. This might include adding plugins or other minor effects. Its up to you, what you want to achieve with the album, and the audience you want to reach. Mastering Optimizes the Overall Sound Think of mastering as adding sparkle and shine to your music. The term refers to the process of optimizing each individual track by compressing, equalizing, making stereo enhancements, or adjusting the reverberation (echo) effect. In a very basic sense, when you master your album, youre making sure that song one doesnt blow out the speakers while the next song is barely audible. The mixing process extends to this, but mastering takes a broader view- youre focusing more on each individual track when youre mixing. Mastering focuses on idiosyncrasies in each track with an eye and an ear toward their progression. It takes in all the tracks as a whole. You want the levels of the songs to be similar throughout and a general sense of cohesiveness to your recording. You want to flow from start to finish. Apart from correcting obvious differences in volume for each song, mastering is an incredibly subjective process. In some ways, musicians believe that you either have the golden touch or you dont when it comes to mastering. Although some programs help you master your recording yourself, paying to have it done professionally is a good investment if you plan on releasing your recording to the public. When to Choose Mixing or Mastering If youre planning on using your recording for a demo, mastering is not an absolute necessity. It requires much more intensive knowledge and experience than mixing so it can be costly when done by a professional. On the other hand, mixing is something you should always make an effort to do, no matter what stage of release your song or album might be in. You dont have to hire a professional and you dont have to be a professional, but you should at least try to give each of your songs a rough mix whenever possible. Unlike mastering, you can do mixing at home. It requires practice and time, but with some dedication, you can get the job done.

Four Essential Steps for Comprehensive Mobile Recruiting
Four Essential Steps for Comprehensive Mobile Recruiting Four Essential Steps for Comprehensive Mobile Recruiting Remember the good old days? You know the ones? When you could sit down to dinner with friends and actually hold a conversation rather than texting across the table. Or perhaps you miss the idea of being tied to a lumbering hulk of a desktop computer in order to shoot off a few emails to friends or potential employers. The nostalgic craving for simpler methods of communication is so intense, we hear some people are even lining up to spend upwards of $1500 to purchase a newly reinvented, old, low-tech phone. For the rest of us realists, however, we know that mobile is here to stay. In our increasingly connected world, recruiters and hiring managers looking to attract top talent need a plan and a solid platform for being where the job-seekers are. As always, Simply Hired is here to the rescue with four essential steps for comprehensive mobile recruiting, that are sure to find your jobs listings reaching your tech-savvy applicant audience. 1. Develop a Plan The first step to any comprehensive solution is the development of a solid plan of action. Clearly defined goals are necessary for a successful project roll out. For your hiring plan, this means identifying just want your mobile recruitment system needs to accomplish. Once youâve identified the ideal capabilities, you can move on to the next steps in execution. This may seem all well and good, but if youâre starting off in the mobile recruitment game it can be difficult to identify concrete features and abilities. This means something a bit more detailed than âhave a mobile recruitment system.â To start, try perusing websites that already attract on-the-go talent. Try navigating through their job search and application features and identify the pros and cons in ease of use. If there are specific features that may come in handy, be sure to jot those down on your goals list. Imitation is, after all, the best form of flattery. Without clearly defined goals, no project can be successful. In the case of mobile recruiting, this means stating what exactly you want candidates to be able to do from their mobile devices. This may require some competitive research and evaluation of current capabilities. Some things to consider: After you have the features, itâs time to start looking at your current systems and resources. Identify any current technologies that may be useful in integrating a mobile recruitment platform. Youâll also want to check with your IT department or budget chair to decide whether you have the current workforce necessary to build out a solution or the funds needed to hire outside help. Lastly, once you have an idea of capabilities, pick a solid implementation date. Incremental milestones along the way to final roll-out will not only help you hit your goal, but it will also alleviate stress from yourself and project managers along the way. 2. Make the Business Case Sure, you may see the value of a comprehensive mobile recruitment plan, but you might not be the final decision maker when it comes to money or resources. As with any business proposition, hiring managers should be prepared to make a business case for the need of mobile recruitment. The underlying principle here will be ROI, or return on investment. With any successful business model, the benefit received by the company should meet or exceed the output of resources. While the idea that applicants are increasingly mobile may seem intuitive, youâll need to find physical evidence to back your ideas. Try pointing to readily available studies on the use of mobile technology in recruiting across your industry or among your target hiring demographic. If youâve seen a downturn in qualified candidates, network among your peers to find out if their mobile solutions have helped turn the tide. Present this information to your decision makers to help secure the support your mobile recruitment efforts will need. 3. Get Internal Buy-In After youâve secured the funding, itâs time to rally the troops. Developing a mobile recruitment solution will typically involve the help of multiple company departments. IT will be essential in integrating any new system. Managers will have to utilize the platforms that are ultimately designed. Finally, existing employees should feel comfortable with the benefits of a mobile solution so that they use it to keep in touch once theyâve exited the company. The all-important facts you previously gathered for management sign off will be useful here. More beneficial, however, will be the relationships and personal repertoire you build with individual team leaders. Try to identify benefits to each individual department. Convince managers that streamlining their processes will save time and paperwork. Perhaps marketing will see the benefits of presenting unified social networking or messaging brand to recruits. Whatever the case may be, identify one or two solid benefits to the key players and get them involved early to ensure the mobile recruiting solution is rolled out on time and in the most efficient and useful manner possible. 4. Choose The Right Partners The last, but certainly not least, bit of advice we have when it comes to a mobile recruitment plan is to realize that you donât necessarily have to go it alone. Starting from scratch, for example, will involve more work than utilizing an existing partner or platform. While some companies may have specific needs that call for bespoke solutions, you will often be able to use key elements or out of the box solutions from software vendors, hiring professionals, or existing job search platforms. The meaning paradox is life about you or other people
The meaning paradox is life about you or other people The meaning paradox is life about you or other people Imagine a choice between two life paths. They are different, and they diverge from one another, but they are also complimentary, and they are paths that we all follow in one way or another. The first - you are given a process, and you are given a responsibility, and the outcome that emerges as they collide is pure satisfaction. The only catch? You are alone on this path. The second?- ?you have this same path in front of you, but the process and the responsibility donât ever fully merge, so there is never any pure satisfaction?- ?no escape from dissatisfaction. Instead, what you have are other people in your life to share that dissatisfaction with, and that dissatisfaction eventually becomes infused with a deep sense of meaning that your life would otherwise lack.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In Mahayana Buddhism, there is an ideal archetype known as a Bodhisattva. The gen eral Buddhist doctrine argues that life is full of suffering. It also promises that by following an ancient process of meditative techniques laid out by the Buddha, this suffering can be overcome and a blissful state of pure joy and enlightenment can be achieved. Now, a Bodhisattva is a figurehead who has taken the responsibility and done the work to follow this process to enlightenment but then decided to walk back on it, towards suffering, so they can help other people still stuck in the cycle. The first of the hypothetical paths is the path of wisdom?- ?itâs the path that anyone who is seeking to understand their life and the problems in it is following, and itâs a path that can only ever truly be pursued alone; the path of the enlightened ones. The second of the hypothetical paths is the path of compassion?- ?itâs the path that anyone who is seeking meaning in their life is following, and itâs a path that is forced to embrace suffering and dissatisfaction due to the comple xities that arise when other people are in the picture; the path of the Bodhisattvas. In the day to day lives of most people, these paths intersect and interact, and they challenge and contradict each other. Sometimes, we find ourselves looking inwardly, at our wants and needs, cravings and aversions, trying to satisfy or resist them, working on ourselves at the expense of the outside world so we can move a little farther along. Other times, we feel a responsibility towards others. Their problems become our problems, their joys our joys, and often, we work on them at the expense of ourselves because without these people all the inward work would feel hollow. If this is still a little abstract, letâs make it more concrete:Life is ultimately a single-player game, but the only thing that truly makes it worth living has something to do with our relationships to other people, and this paradox sits at the core what it means to be a human being. No matter how direct or indirect, any of the deeper problems we face emerge from conflicts that arise due to our sense of self. Beyond bare necessities like food and shelter, when we want something, the need is less because thatâs what the laws of physics dictate and more because our deeply conditioned self either craves a thing or is averse to it. Now, by deconstructing this self and reconstructing its habit patterns, we can hack away at the problems that come up. This happens naturally through experience and awareness, and itâs also the goal of most meditative practices. In this sense, life is problem-solving?- ?and itâs full of problems nobody else can solve for us because they are internal problems that require a change in perception. Others can help, guide, and encourage us, but at its core, the game is still only ours to play.At the same time, the more we deconstruct this self, the further away we move from other people; other selves. This is because the self is a social construct?- ?itâs born at the intersection of our relationships to our cultures, our tribes, our families, and other spatial and temporal affiliations that constrain and condition us at each and every moment of our lives. And the more internal problems we solve, the further away from this conditioning we get, and the further away from other people we get, and the more alone we feel on the path ahead of us. It would seem that other people are both the cause of our problems, and paradoxically, the final, redeeming solution. There is a scene in Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace in which a group of characters that attend a Tennis academy for gifted children is commiserating after a long, arduous training session. They have been pushed and pushed and pushed, practically to the point of needless suffering, so they can improve their skills and uphold the reputation of the academy. At one point during their collective commiserating, they begin to wonder why they are always allotted this time to sit together after they have been p ushed so hard. Surely the organizers know that they have made them suffer, and they also know that there isnât much these kids can do about it besides sit and complain together. Why, then, do they always get this brief time-window in an otherwise brutally efficient schedule, made only to turn the kids into machines, so they can just sit around and moan to each other? The answer, they eventually realize, is to build a sense of community?- ?a shared purpose. They may all be going through hell, and they may all be doing so individually, without any one of them being able to lessen the otherâs burden, but at the same time, deep in this lonesomeness, they have a shared experience they can come back to, and this experience adds a deeper layer of meaning where there otherwise isnât one, and that?- ?maybe, perhaps?- ?makes it all a little less lonesome even if they are still fundamentally alone.Problem-solving is individual; meaning is collective. With problems, there is suffering. Wit hout them, there is no meaning. The self, then, is both the ultimate problem and also the ultimate solution, and this dance that we find ourselves in the midst of hits its edge right at the point where we, individually, solve our problems and then share the answers the best we can with others who are going through same motions in different ways. One of the key things to note about the Bodhisattva archetype is that itâs not about blind giving or blind compassion. They arenât just figures who are mindlessly dedicated to other people and their suffering without understanding what it is, where it comes from, and what exactly they are working to help. No, their first and foremost concern is to pursue the path?- ?as the Buddha did?- ?to gain wisdom for themselves and only then do they go back to relate to others. They may make sacrifices, and they may put outside interests before their own, but they only ever do that if they are ready to do that?- ?if they have done the work required t o earn the right to give.In the same way, the target of our individual responsibility still lies within each of us?- ?we still have to play the game for ourselves, and we have to learn to get good at it. That said, once we have beaten parts of this game, rather than forcing our way forward right away?- ?even if problems persist?- ?itâs worthwhile to stop a while, to take a breath, a moment, to share those experiences with others. Itâs fine and well to accept that life is a single-player game, to keep moving to higher levels, but if we donât make compromises in-between to focus beyond that, we neglect meaning. In most relationships between people, especially romantic ones, if the individuals share a lot their time and space with each other, they begin to merge their selves, and thatâs another extreme. Rather than placing their own path as the top priority, they rely on another to fill a void that they have left open. This removes a lot of the aloneness that is inherent in any individual journey, and it can and does create meaning, but it neglects the fact that there are an increasing number of problems still unaddressed, which sooner or later overpower and destroy whatever meaning is shared. The balance, then, must lie somewhere in-between: to pursue what you must pursue for yourself first and foremost, accepting that it is only you who can do that, and then, as you progress, share bits and pieces of this with others so you can combine one whole and another whole into something greater, something a little more complete, realizing and acknowledging that it will still always remain somewhat incomplete. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Discover If an Employer Is Right for You
How to Discover If an Employer Is Right for You How to Discover If an Employer Is Right for You When youâre job searching, itâs easy to fall into the mode of looking for a job, any job. After all, you need to make a living, and you canât exactly conjure your dream employer out of thin air, right? While itâs true that youâre somewhat confined by the job market and the opportunities it presents, itâs also true that your preferences are important. Ideally, youâll find a job that youâll want to keep for several years, and that will put you on the path to bigger and better things after you leave. That means understanding what you want and need in a job and an employer, before you start scheduling interviews and practicing your elevator speech. Itâs important to remember that you canât recognize a good thing if you donât know what that looks like for you. When it comes to finding your ideal employer, youâre trying to figure out what makes you most productive, comfortable, and happy: Do you thrive on the challenge and excitement of a startup, or do you need the security and steadiness of a more established employer?Do you like small companies or multinational corporations? Is working from home the perfect situation for you, or do you prefer to talk to your coworkers face-to-face? 10 Questions to Ask to Discover If an Employer Is Right for You The first step is to do a little soul-searching. To figure out kind of environment will make you happy and successful, ask yourself these questions: 1. What Type of Corporate Culture Is Best for You? Some people like having friends at work, while others prefer to keep things professional. The same goes for corporate identity: some workers love feeling like theyâre part of a team, while others would sooner wear a hair shirt than a corporate logo. (Never mind participating in a three-legged race at the company picnic.) Its important to choose an organization that has a company culture that fits your personality. 2. Open-Plan Offices: Collaboration Dream or Productivity Nightmare? Unless youâre an executive in a traditional industry like finance, chances are slim that youâll have an office with a door. But there are varying degrees of openness in todayâs open-plan work environments. Do you need at least a cubicle wall or two, or would you be OK working at one long table with your whole team? A lot depends on your tolerance for noise and need for personal space. 3. How Much Autonomy Do You Prefer? No one likes working for a micromanager, but short of that, thereâs a wide spectrum of acceptable manager involvement. Itâs all about knowing whatâs right for you. Some people prefer a lot of direction, while others would rather work things out on their own. 4. Do You Like Working on a Team or By Yourself? Todayâs workplaces are largely collaborative environments, but companies have different expectations when it comes to working collaboratively or independently. A lot depends on your role, too: an engineer might spend a fair amount of time heads-down on a project, while a project manager will obviously need to touch base frequently to align priorities. 5. Do You Like Change or Stability? If you voted for the latter, donât work for a startup - or any company thatâs in flux. A company thatâs growing quickly or experiencing financial or PR difficulties will not be a stable environment in the short-term. 6. How Much Change Can You Tolerate? Obviously, you donât want to start a job only to find that itâs completely different than the one you agree to take, but jobs evolve. Itâs a good idea to think seriously about what aspects of the job fit best with your priorities and which donât. That way, youâll be able to be alert for signs that the job might grow in a direction you wonât enjoy. 7. How Long Do You Like to Work for One Employer Before Changing Jobs? Amazon has a median employee tenure of two years, according to PayScale data, as does SpaceX, Google, and a host of other top tech employers. Other companies seem staffed with lifers who arrive after graduation and stay for years. Neither situation is inherently better, but one might be a better fit for you. 8. What Benefits Are Important to You? Health insurance, retirement benefits and paid time off are just the beginning of what might be available to you. You might also get (or negotiate for) additional stock options, tuition reimbursement, a flexible schedule and perks like free gym memberships and museum passes. 9. How Important Is Salary? You need to get paid fairly for the work you do, but past a certain point, more money might not be as important as other considerations like more room for advancement, a chance to pick up new skills or more time off. 10. What Kind of Work-Life Balance Do You Want? âWorking hoursâ mean different things at different companies. Some workers donât mind getting emails from the boss late at night and on the weekends; others need work to have a stopping point, so that life stuff keeps its separate sphere. Look for clues during the interview about the kind of work-life balance you can expect from the prospective employer - and then be honest with yourself about what you really need. 4 Things You Should Learn at Your New Job - The Muse
4 Things You Should Learn at Your New Job - The Muse 4 Things You Should Learn at Your New Job Last month, I started my first post-grad school job. So far Iâm really enjoying it- the work is interesting, and the people are friendly and supportive. It has definitely been an adjustment, however; no matter how great a company is, figuring out the lay of the land when youâre new is always a little tricky. Of course, there are several standard things youâre supposed to do when youâre in a new position: determine the expectations for your role, build a relationship with your manager, and figure out the context for your projects, just to name a few. However, Iâve also found that there are a few important things to learn that arenât directly related to your job- but can be crucial to your success as you begin your new role. 1. Other Teamsâ Priorities In addition to figuring out how your own team functions on a daily basis, itâs also important to get a glimpse into how other teams work. In a business, virtually no one operates in a vacuum, so itâs crucial for you to understand the priorities of the people youâll be collaborating with. This will help you better understand where theyâre coming from when they make a request of you, and it can go a long way toward helping you successfully propose and execute joint projects in the future. For example, I work at an education technology company on a customer-facing team, and I often get feedback about ways the business could improve its product. In order to successfully act on this feedback, I need to have a very clear picture of the engineering teamâs priorities, so I can share information with them thatâs relevant to what theyâre working on. 2. Fun Facts I know that icebreakers are the cheesiest things around. They serve an important purpose, though: Learning something unique and personal about your new co-workers is one of the best ways to start building good relationships with them. So, donât be afraid to start meetings by asking people about themselves and what they like to do when theyâre not at work- it will help you get to know people across the office, and itâs a fun way to take a break from all of the information-heavy conversations you have at the beginning of a new job. 3. The Companyâs Org Chart This one is short and sweet: Take a careful look at your companyâs entire organizational chart sometime during the first week of your new job. Understanding how teams are structured and who reports to who is very helpful as you try to get a sense of how youâll fit into the organization. Iâm also an extremely visual person, so looking at an org chart really helps me remember who people are and what they do. If your company doesnât have an org chart, I recommend creating your own by keeping track of the people you meet and how theyâre related to one another within the organization. Prezi can be a great tool for this because it lets you create an infinite number of layers, so you donât have to start from scratch every time you discover a new group or team. 4. Full Scope of the Day Given the choice, everyone likes to work slightly different hours during the workday. Before you get too settled into your routine, however, I recommend spending one (long) day in the office to experience the full scope of the companyâs hours- by coming in when the first person usually gets in and staying until the last person leaves. This will give you a complete picture of how your new organization flows day to day, which could impact when you choose to work. For example, Iâm usually a start early, leave early type of person, but after staying late one day, I found that most of the product and data teams start later and leave later. Everyone is usually busy with meetings during the middle of the day, so I learned that if I ever want uninterrupted time with certain people, then I should wait to go by their desk until after 6 PM. The nice thing about being new is that you have a built-in excuse to ask your co-workers questions about how they operate. Take advantage of it! Everyone likes to talk about themselves, so once you get the conversation going, youâre bound to get great information- which will help you succeed in your new role. Why and how women must prepare differently for the future
Why and how women must prepare differently for the future Why and how women must prepare differently for the future As a financial coach, I choose to work specifically with women, because I know that womenâs financial situations differ from menâs. Iâm passionate about pay inequality, reproductive rights, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and the investment gap. I also know that women think about and use their money differently than men do. But how do all of these things affect womenâs lives and futures for the long term?I recently spoke with Lisa Margeson, head of retirement client experience and communications at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. We talked about the findings in Merrill Lynchâs report, Women Financial Wellness: Beyond the Bottom Line. Based on the report findings and my conversation with Lisa, Iâll tell you why and how women need to plan for their futures differently than men do.Women live longerOn average, women live at least 5 years longer than men do. This means that women will need more money and more healthcare. This also means that many women will end up sing le at the end of their lives, supporting themselves. By age 85, women outnumber men two to one and 81 percent of centenarians are women. Two-thirds of women hope to live to be 100 years old, but most of these women are also afraid of running out of money during that time. In addition, the average woman will have 39 percent higher health costs than the average man in retirement, paying an additional $194,000. Thatâs a lot of money. What can you do about it?Understand the savings vehicles that you have with respect to health saving. If you enroll in a high-deductible insurance plan, take advantage of the HSA (health savings account) that is offered for you. This account affords you triple tax savings because you put your money in pre-tax, it grows as an investment tax-free, and you can withdraw tax-free for qualifying healthcare expenses. You are eligible for an HSA on your own or through your employer, as long as you participate in a qualified high-deductible health plan (HDHP).Make sure you and your partner (if you have one) gets permanent life insurance while youâre still young and healthy. You should get at least enough to cover a mortgage (if you have one) and anything that you or your partner is responsible for paying for. This will financially protect either of you in the event of death. Iâll go into this more below, but you should also start saving early and save as much as you can for retirement throughout your life.Women earn and save lessIâm sure youâve heard of the wage gap. It means that on average, women earn 20 percent less than men for the same work. That gap gets much worse for women of color, some earning up to 50 percent less than men. And this wage gap doesnât only affect women while they are working, it follows them throughout their lifetime by contributing to the investment gap.Due to earning less, women are saving and investing less as well. This means that they accumulate less in their retirement accounts than men do. By earnin g less, youâre contributing less, your employer is matching less, and youâre earning less interest. By the time a woman reaches retirement age, she will have earned over $400,000 less than a man, even if she never stopped working for any reason. What can you do about it?First of all, negotiate your salary! Yes, the wage gap is not just the fault of women not negotiating their salary properly. However, negotiating for more money is one way to help close that gap, and a great way to make sure that you earn more over the course of your career. So, negotiate for more when youâre offered a new job, negotiate for more when youâre getting a raise or promotion, and always increase the amount youâre putting into retirement when your salary goes up.According to Lisa, womenâs number one regret around money is not investing more. Start investing for retirement as early as possible, and save as much as you can. It can be confusing at first, so donât be afraid to talk about money and ask questions about investing. If your employer offers a retirement plan, they are required to provide a financial expert to answer questions about it. Set up a meeting with that expert once a year and make sure that youâre investing responsibly based on your retirement timeline. Keep that dialogue going and educate yourself as much as possible. The more confident you are about your financial knowledge, the more likely you are to take positive action.Womenâs careers are interrupted more oftenThe wage gap cannot be explained away by women taking time off to raise children, even though some people try to use that argument. However, women are still the primary caregiver in American households. Shockingly, women spend 44 percent of their lives out of the workforce for various reasons. Compare that to men, who spend only 28 percent of their adult lives out of the workforce. This can look like taking time off to care for children or taking time off to care for a spouse or parent. T his time off means women are losing income and losing time where they would otherwise be contributing money to their retirement. It can absolutely be detrimental to a womanâs future ability to support herself. What can you do about it?Plan for career interruptions early. Invest as much as possible from the beginning of your career, especially if you plan on having children. Even if you donât plan to have children, you never know if your partner or another loved one will need your care later on. So, save earlier and save more, if you can.Get clear on the financial implications and trade-offs that would come along with taking time off of work to be a caretaker. How will it affect you in the long run? Can you afford to take time off, or should you look into outsourcing that care? Can you decrease the amount of time that youâre working, rather than leaving the workforce entirely? Itâs important to ask yourselves these kinds of questions so that you are as prepared as possible. The moral of this report is that womenâs lives play out differently than menâs, and that affects our financial wellness in big ways. We have to be aware of these differences and prepare for them. While we are trying to improve big things like the wage gap and investment gap, we must also take action in our own lives to ensure that we are taken care of.This post was originally published on my Women@Forbes column.
